Dr. Carl J. Huberty, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away on Monday, December 28, 2020 at the age of 86.
Born in Lena, Wisconsin, Dr. Huberty was a son of the late Clem Huberty and Rosalie VanDerperren Huberty. He was a member of The Catholic Center at the University of Georgia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Art Huberty, Kenny Huberty, Tony Huberty, Rita Martens and brother-in-law, Larry Martens.
Dr. Huberty graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a degree in Mathematics in 1956. Two years later, he was awarded a Masters in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1961, he started teaching mathematics and coaching basketball at the U.S. Army Dependents School in Orleans, France. During his three years there, he also traveled all over Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Russia.
In August of 1966, Carl married Sandra Sue VanVonderen, and they remained married for 54 years. Soon after their marriage, he was admitted to the doctoral program at the University of Iowa, and in August 1969 he was awarded his Ph.D. That same month, he and his family moved to Georgia, where Dr. Huberty started a 33 year stint of teaching applied statistics in the College of Education and Department of Statistics at the University of Georgia. He continued his love of coaching, as he coached his sons Greg and Jeff in basketball, football and little league baseball. He also continued his love of travel, defending his doctoral students’ dissertations all over the United States as well as British Columbia, Egypt, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra S. Huberty; four sons, Greg Huberty (Patti), Brian Huberty, Jeff Huberty (Lisa) and Kurt Huberty; siblings, John Huberty (Mary Lynn), Joe Huberty (Carol) and Leah Dumke (Bob); four grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asked for donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or The Catholic Center in Athens, Georgia.
