Willis G. Colquitt

Another one of the greatest generation is gone, Willis Garner Colquitt, 91, died Tuesday, July 31, 2012.

A native of Sandy Cross, he was the son of the late Larry Gant Colquitt and Rosa Nell Bryant Harwell. He was also preceded in death by his previous wife; Nanalene Castleberry Colquitt; son: Mike Colquitt; brothers: L.G. Colquitt, Lewis Colquitt; sisters: Odell Michalici, Dorothy Huff, Frieda Hyde, Leatrice Morris and grandson: Eric Shaw. Mr. Colquitt served his country in the US Navy during WWII aboard USS Hornet, USS Chincoteague and the USS Hooper Island. He was a member and deacon of Sandy Cross Baptist Church and a faithful worker with the Sandy Cross Volunteer Fire Department. He was a carpenter and retired from Certainteed.

Survivors include his wife; Sulene Palmer Colquitt; children: Christopher (Sandy) Colquitt of Winterville, Larry Colquitt of Rochester, NY; brother: Mark (Irene) Harwell of Hendersonville, NC; six step children; 28 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 3, 2012 at 2PM at Sandy Cross Baptist Church with Rev. David Johnston and Rev. Nathan Palmer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the funeral home.

Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to the Sandy Cross Volunteer Fire Department.
