William "WD" Donald Smith, Sr.

William Donald Smith, Sr “W.D.”., 86, of Hull passed away on January 8, 2023. Born on February 27, 1936, he was the son of the late Van Mitchell Smith and Drucilla Hill Mann.

W.D was born in Whitehall, GA. and entered the navy at which was 18 during the Korean conflict.  After his military service he began his career in Athens as a fireman and later becoming the fire department’s vehicle maintenance supervisor. W.D continued his work with Athens-Clarke County for 34 years until his retirement.

W.D. after his retirement, enjoyed traveling, gardening, fishing, and spending time with his family. He was seen daily in many local businesses throughout the community where he loved to shop and bring joy to many people he met.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Smith.

Survivors include his children, William Donald Smith II “Don” (Dianne), Amanda Faust (Donny); grandchildren, William Donald Smith III (Wendy), Jarrod Smith, Landon Faust, Larsin Faust; great grandson, William Donald Smith IV; brother, J.C. Smith (Martha), and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at 1:30 PM in the chapel of Lord & Stephens East. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 to 1:30 pm. Interment will follow at Athens Memory Gardens.
