William Charles “Chuck” Steen, 79, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2024 in his residence with his loving wife, children and family at his side.
Chuck was born in Clarksdale, MS to the late Judson Harlan Steen and Lucille Snow Steen. He achieved multiple degrees from both Mississippi State University and the University of Kentucky. He moved to Athens in 1970 to begin a career with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. During his career he was awarded the Bronze Medal for Commendable Service in recognition of his research activities. After more than 30 years of distinguished service with the E.P.A. and adjunct faculty at the University of Georgia, he retired to pursue time with family and other areas of community social work.
Chuck had a passion for UGA athletics and worked to support the athletic programs through more than 15 years of event management services. He also served on the Oconee County Planning Commission for 10 years. He was a founding member of the Oconee County Rotary Club and received the distinguished Paul Harris Fellow award. He was a longstanding active member of the Watkinsville First United Methodist Church at which he frequently sung in the church choir and Men’s quartet.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary; Son, Christian Steen, MD of Lexington, SC, Daughter, Wendy Steen of Watkinsville, GA, three grandchildren Elena, Kaitlin & Casey and great grandson Travis.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Watkinsville First United Methodist Church.
