William A. "Bill" Whitmire, husband of the late Florence Berlin Whitmire, died Monday, November 24, 2014.
Born August 16, 1932, William Adolphus Whitmire was the son of Durand Whitmire and Doris Walker Whitmire of Douglasville, Georgia. He was born in Homer, Georgia and grew up on a farm in Douglas County. He attended the University of Georgia and received a bachelor's degree in Agriculture in 1955. After graduation he served in the Army at Ft. Dix, NJ, where he met and married Florence Berlin of Philadelphia, PA. In 1965 Bill and Florence moved to Athens, Georgia with their two children, son Walker and daughter Laurel. Soon after, Bill founded a fertilizer company in Bishop, GA named Agri Chemicals, and later a chemical company, A & W Products. In 1986 they made Bishop their home as well. Throughout his life Bill retained an interest in agriculture, and, after his retirement, an interest in traveling.
Bill was well known for his sense of humor, quick wit, and loyalty to friends and family.
He is survived by his son, Walker Malcolm Whitmire and daughter, Laurel Beth Whitmire.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 30, 2014 at 2PM at Lord & Stephens West Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held at Oconee Memorial Park.
