William Roche Townsend

William Roche Townsend ,97, of Watkinsville passed away on Monday, January 24, 2022. Born on March 2, 1924 in Athens, Georgia, he was the son of the late George A. Townsend, Sr. and Madeline Roche Townsend.

William, nicknamed Bodie, was a retired Colonel with the United States Airforce serving in WWII and was enlisted during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.  He graduated from Athens High School in 1942, where he was an avid athlete, “Track Star”, and was on the 1941 Athens High State Championship football team. He later graduated from the University of Georgia in 1951. He was a life long Braves and UGA fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Supensky Townsend; son, Kent S. Townsend; siblings, Eugene A. Townsend, Marie T. Conner.

Survivors include his sons, Todd Townsend (Milicent); Mark Townsend; brother, George A. Townsend, Jr.; grandson, Will Townsend (Lauren). The family would like to pay special respects to Peggy Williams, who was William’s long-time caregiver who became more like family.
