Athens, GA - William Robert Phillips (Bob), 82, passed away February 28, 2008 following a brief illness.
Born December 3, 1925 in Clarke County, he was the son of the late William R. and Hilda Puryear Phillips and was preceded in death by a son, Paul Mitchell Phillips.
After graduating from Winterville High School, he served 3 years in the U.S. Navy. Bob previously worked with Georgia Power Company and Russell Daniel Irrigation and retired from Athens Janitor Supply in 1990. He was a former member of Athens Jaycees, the Elks Club and the Athens Touchdown Club. Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He spent his retirement years between his home in Athens and Rabun County, where he enjoyed fishing and the beauty of the North Georgia mountains.
Graveside services will be Sunday, March 2, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Oconee Hill Cemetery with Rev. Chuck Smith officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Mercer, Charles Carter, Alan King, Bill Miller and Courtney Spratlin.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Bettie James Phillips; son, David Robert Phillips; grandson, John Hagen; sister-in-law, Joy James Sowle and her husband David, of Salem Oregon; nephew, George James of Athens; niece, Rita James Morrell of Greenville, SC and "Best Buddy", Chazz Tillman.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
