Athens - William Erle Pabor passed away on July 24, 2007, after a brief illness. He was 83 years old.
Erle was born on May 7, 1924, in Green Cove Springs, Florida, and spent his youth in Avon Park, Florida. A son of the late Charles and Bertha Bennett Pabor, he graduated from high school in June of 1942 and put aside his plans to study music at Rollins College with the hopes of becoming a band director to serve his country during World War II. He enlisted in the US Navy, in which he served for 20 years. During World War II, he served on the USS Hancock and after retirement was involved in the Hancock Association. After retiring from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, he went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller. He retired from the Department of Defense in 1980. He attended Armstrong State College in Savannah, Georgia.
He married Gloria Carolyn Hughs in 1946. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on Sunday, July 22 of this year. They moved to Athens in 1993. Erle was a member of the First United Methodist Church, The Fellowship Sunday School Class, Golden K Kiwanis Club, and played clarinet in the Classic City Band.
Mr. Pabor is survived by his wife, Gloria; daughter Dorothy Anne Pabor Bird of Boulder, Colorado; daughters, Polly Pabor Linthicum and Elizabeth Pabor Barnwell of Johns Creek, Georgia; son, Thomas Erle Pabor of Fort Worth, Texas; five grandsons, four granddaughters, one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 27, 2007, at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church in Athens, Georgia. Interment was in Evergreen Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Navy Memorial.
