William "Billy" Maxwell, age 92, of Lexington, GA, passed away on August 11th at VA hospital in Augusta, GA. Billy was born in San Diego, CA on November 5, 1919 to Oliver and Helen Maxwell. He served in the Navy, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and served in the Pacific Theatre during the war. He served on several different ships and was in many naval battles, one in which earned him a purple heart. He also served in the Korean War. He retired from the Navy in 1960 after twenty years of service and later retired from Westinghouse in 1984 having worked twenty-three years, affectionately know as "Chief".
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister, Mary Smith.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Ellen Tiller Maxwell; one daughter, Nora Schmidt (Don) of Athens, GA; two sons, William M. Maxwell (Elaine) of Pace, FL and George L. J. Spearing, III (Gail) of Lexington, GA; four grandchildren, George L. J. Spearing, IV (Paige) of Arnoldsville, GA, Susan Hollingsworth (Sean) of Norcross, GA, Paul Spearing (Julie) of Creedmore, NC and Michelle Moser of Fargo, ND; and ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, EAST. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to service time.
