William Henson "Bill" Gilmer
Bishop
Bill Gilmer, at the age of 86, was called to his heavenly home on Saturday evening, October 11, 2014, while visiting his beloved North Georgia Mountains and being around the people he loved. He enjoyed life to the fullest and his last day on earth was filled with happy memories.
Born and raised in Winterville, GA, he was the son of the late Early Thomas Gilmer and Bessie Jane Henson Gilmer. He is preceded in death by a son, William Randall (Billy) Gilmer. Bill was a lifelong trucker and in earlier years, was the owner and operator of Gilmer's Wrecker Service. Bill was the patriotic sort. He served his county in the U.S. Navy during the Korean wartime and was a life member of AMVETS Post #10 and life member of VFW #2872 of Athens. He actively served as AMVETS 3rd District Commander for one year and AMVETS State Commander for a number of years. Bill served and honored his country and American veterans in various activities across a span of 30 years and was very instrumental in the founding of the Oconee Veterans Park Foundation for the design and construction of the Veterans Memorial. He was a member of Ray's United Methodist Church and attended as often as possible in his later years. Bill was loved by many near and far, many were proud to call him friend.
Bill is survived by his wife Beth Michael Gilmer. His children: Sandy (Wayne) Smith of Colbert, Debbi (Bob) Ashbaugh of CA, and Michael Gilmer of CA; one sister: Lorraine (Myron) Seagraves of Roswell; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren who loved their "Papa," as well as three nieces. We will always carry your memory in our hearts.
