William Mayes Dobbins

March 8, 1955 — February 24, 2025

Hull, GA

William Mayes ”Dobby” Dobbins, Jr, a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son passed away February 24, 2025. He was born to William Mayes Dobbins, Sr and Patricia Winburn Dobbins on March 8, 1955.

Dobby graduated from Montgomery County High School in 1973 where he served as class president his freshman and junior years. He was a phenomenal athlete in football (regional champs and starting quarterback his junior and senior years), basketball (runner-up State Champs in ’72), baseball (MVP junior year and regional champs ’72), and golf. In his senior year, Dobby was runner-up for low medalist in golf (region 4B). He remained an avid golfer his entire life. As a senior, the faculty of Montgomery County HS awarded Dobby with the Daughters’of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizenship Award! One boy and one girl of the senior class (1973) received this award.

Dobby also played basketball and baseball at Middle Georgia College and Brewton-Parker College before transferring to University of Georgia, in Athens, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and minor in Communications in 1978.

In the late 70’s and early 80’s Dobby’s Quick Stop Store kept him busy until he started his 28-year career at Delta Air Lines in Atlanta, GA. In his various roles at Delta, Dobby was loved by all because of his ”team-player” work ethic and great sense of humor!

Dobby was a passionate dog lover. He rescued, re-homed, and fostered many dogs along the way. Another passion was running the Peachtree Road Race every July 4th for 10 plus years.

In retirement, Dobby and his wife Susan moved to Athens to be close to his granddaughters. He loved his family and was happiest when spending time with them, especially watching his granddaughters play basketball and softball. His sports legacy lives on in his two amazingly athletic granddaughters!

Dobby is survived by his loving wife, Susan Martocchia Milne; daughter, Dominique Dobbins Munday (Andrew); granddaughters Reagan Monroe Munday and Mable Faye Munday; stepson William Henry Milne; his mother, Patricia Winburn Dobbins; sisters Debra Dobbins Gay (Carl) and Donna Brice Sharpton (Jimmy); and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, William Mayes Dobbins, Sr; nephew, Turner Dobbins Brice; brother-in-law, Mitchell Francis Brice II; and stepson, Daniel Richard Milne.

A celebration of Dobby’s life is being planned. Details will be announced soon.
