W.C. "Smitty" Smith, 90, of Athens, died Sunday, September 20, 2015. He was born in Oglethorpe County to the late Carl Samuel and Ruby Mae Thomas Smith of Enterprise GA. W.C. was a graduate of Meson Academy and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific on the USS Burleson. He retired from Southern Bell after thirty-seven years and was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bernice B. Smith, children Wayne Smith (Mary Elaine) of Woodstock, Gay Boswell (Rick) of Watkinsville, and Wesley Smith (Cheryl) of Athens, sister Elizabeth Pope of Canton, brother Garnett Smith of Marietta, eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 24th at 11:00 A.M. at Tuckston United Methodist Church with Rev. Wayne Smith officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tuckston UMC or St. Mary's Hospice.
