Dr. Warren Thomas Atyeo, 81, died Thursday, October 9, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospice House, Athens, GA.
Born in Highland Park, Michigan, he was the son of the late Mary Grace McGinnis and Albert J. Atyeo. After graduating Plymoth High School, Plymoth, Illinois, he attended Northwestern University, Western Illinois University and the University of Kansas receiving his PhD in Entomology in 1959. He served his country in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. As a professor he worked at the University of Nebraska in the Department of Entomology, at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, and the University of Georgia in the Department of Entomology as Curator and Professor until his retirement in 1994 becoming a Professor Emeritus. During his career he composed approximately 165 publications concerning Entomology. He was a Mason, member of the American Legion, Entomological Society of America, Acarology Society of America and the Boy Scouts of America where as a Lone Scout he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Marilyn J. Atyeo; daughter: Eleanor A. McMannon of Thomson, GA; sons: Thomas W. (Hope M.) Atyeo of Anderson, SC, Timothy R (Teresa) Atyeo of Parkland, FL; grandchildren: Asheton G. Atyeo, Natalie N. Atyeo, John Thomas Atyeo and Caroline G. Atyeo.
A memorial service will be held Monday, October 13, 2008 at 4PM at St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church with Rev. Beth Long officiating. A reception will follow.
