On January 13, 2009 Vivian Vines peacefully passed away at the age of 87. Vivian had been a resident of Athens, Georgia for the past 40 years. She lived a full life surrounded by love and caring.
Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. H. Max Vines, who passed away on April 14, 2006. They were married more than 60 years and are survived by two sons, Dr. Steven Vines and Michael Vines; a granddaughter, Michelle Roth; and three great granddaughters, Lillian, Madeline and Annabel.
She was born in Eastland, Texas to Morris and Lois Hattaway and grew up primarily in Alabama, where she met her husband while he was in high school driving the local school bus. Marrying and, after her husband returned from the war, moving to Riverside, California for her husband to complete his Ph.D. degree. They then relocated to Winter Haven, Florida, followed by her husband's appointment in 1967 to a position as professor at the University of Georgia in Athens, where they remained and made a lot of friends including hosting foreign exchange students at their home. She will be remembered for her compassion and caring for others and all kinds of animals.
Vivian was very active in local organizations and the Republican Party along with University functions and loved music. She was an avid bridge player, gardener and UGA supporter and looked forward to the tailgating gatherings at football events.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 12:00 PM CST at Rock Creek Church of God, Bessemer, Alabama. Vivian Vines will be interred next to her husband in the Vines Family Rock Creek Cemetery immediately following the church service. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 AM until service time.
