Valerie Porterfield Spinks

Valerie Paul Porterfield Spinks, age 95 of Carlton, GA, died September 5th, 2015. Valerie was born in Oglethorpe County and attended Meson Academy. She was the daughter of the late H.A. and Mary Holloman Paul and formerly married to Guy Porterfield for 57 years. Valerie owned and operated her own hairstyling shop, was a beloved mother and homemaker, and an active member of Carlton Baptist Church since the age of 19. She spent several years teaching both youth and senior adults in Sunday School. After retiring, she spent several years at home caring for her husband Guy after he developed Alzheimer's disease. After his death, she later married Marion (Bud) Spinks uniting two families together as one - each accepted and loved by the other. Valerie leaves behind one sister, Betty Matthews (Malvin), and one brother, Broughton Paul (Judy). She was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Foster (Cliff) and brothers Maurice (Laurie), Carrol (Jeanette), Skeets (Rebecca), Joel (Betty), and Jerry Paul. She leaves behind daughters Daphne Dyes (Terrell), Dolores Boswell (Donald), Denise Cooper (Bruce), Pam Whitfield (Dennis) and one son, Don "Butch" Spinks. Valerie also leaves twelve grandchildren Alicia George, Merideth Cagle, Chris Boswell, Cindy Nash, Casey Cooper, Kurt Cooper, Kyle Cooper, Lee Spinks, Brian Spinks, Joel Whitfield, Stephanie Jordan and Tara Jensen. She was blessed with nineteen great- grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren, all whom she loved dearly. Pallbearers are grandsons and great grandsons Casey Cooper, Kurt Cooper, Kyle Cooper, Chris Boswell, Corey Boswell, Chad Boswell, Blake Nash, and Max Nash. Honorary pallbearers are nephews Ryan Paul, Rusty Paul, Dennis Paul, Glenn Paul, Dean Paul, Lee Paul, Jay Paul, Gary Foster, and son-in-law Dennis Whitfield. The family will receive visitors at 1:00 at Carlton Baptist Church on Tuesday, September 8th, and the service will begin at 2:00. Reverends Ray Black and Doug Ivey will officiate. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a contribution in Mrs. Spinks's honor may do so to the Carlton Cemetery Fund or the charity of their choice.
