Athens - Valentine Joseph Montoya, 94, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2009.
Born January 27, 1915, in Valdez, Colo., he was the son of the late Samuel and Emilia Montoya and was the oldest of eleven children, having five brothers and five sisters. He graduated from Primero High School, Colorado, and the Denver School of Business. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked as an accountant for Lotz Steel Construction and Peoria Tubing in Peoria, Ill., until retirement in 1980. He was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Club.
Val and Anita, his wife of sixty-seven years, retired to Coral Springs, Fla., in 1980. They resided in Florida for twenty-five years before moving to Georgia in 2005. Anita died in January 2007. Both were faithful member of the Roman Catholic faith.
He is survived by his daughters, Celeste Strode and husband, Jim, of Bonneau, S.C., and Annette Richt and husband, Lou, of Watkinsville, Ga.; son, Aaron Montoya and wife, Carmen, of Puerto Rico; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; four sisters, Irene, Alva, Catherine and Irma of Colorado; one brother, George of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be Thursday, August 27, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the UGA Catholic Center. Entombment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park in Athens.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the military branch of choice or the UGA Catholic Center.
