Lexington - Lt. Col. Thomas Newton Epps, Sr., 81, died Friday, February 4, 2011 at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Born in Crawford, Ga., March 22, 1929, he was the son of Vera Itice Edwards Epps and Owen Newton Epps. Thomas entered the Army in 1950 as 2nd Lt. upon his graduation from North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Ga. He served as a Major in Military Intelligence in Korea in 1953 and 1954. He graduated from South Eastern Baptist Theology Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. in 1962 and served as Pastor in a number of churches in South Carolina and Georgia and as a Chaplin on the D.E.W. line in the Arctic from 1966-1975. Thomas taught school in Greene County and Oglethorpe County.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Joanne Prince Epps; children, Ann Epps Tweedell (Tom), Tom Epps, Jr. (Kelly), Jim Epps (Patti), and Joe Epps; grandchildren, Amy Jo Tweedell, Cobern Tweedell, Tommy Epps, III, Bobby Epps, John Epps, and David Epps; brother, William Owen Epps; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Saturday February 5, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home East. The funeral will be Sunday February 6, 2011 at Lexington Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. Graveside service will follow at Crawford Cemetery.
