Thomas Morton Carlton, 54, of Bishop, died October 21, 2011.
A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, he was a son of Beverly Beeland Carton, of St. Simon's Island, and the late William Morton Carlton.
Mr. Carlton was employed at the Monroe Country Club for over twenty-three years, where he served as Manager and Golf Professional. He was also a former Golf Professional with the Professional Golfers Association. Tommy won back-to-back championships in the Augusta City Amateur Tournament in 1979-1980. He lost to John Cook in the quarterfinals at the Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania in 1977. He played in four U.S. Amateur Golf Tournaments throughout the nation from 1977 to 1980. In 1978 he played the Plainfield Country Club in New Jersey. In 1979 he lost to Mark O'Meara in the quarterfinals of the United States Amateur Championship at Cantebury Golf Club in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1980, he competed in the Country Club of North Carolina at Pinehurst, N.C. He was the 2nd runner up in the Eastern Amateur Golf Tournament at the Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club in Portsmouth, Va. He also qualified and play in the Atlanta Classic in 1985.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 3 p.m. at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, WEST.
Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife, Tina D. Carlton; three children, William M. Carlton, of St. Simon's Island, James Thomas "J.T." Carlton and Claudia E. Carlton, both of Monroe; two brothers, William "Beeland" Carlton, of St. Simon's Island, and David Parks Carlton, of Huntsville, Ala.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Potter's House or the Oconee County Food Bank.
