Thelma Marie Harrington (1937-2016) passed away suddenly on August 24, 2016 in Athens, Georgia.
Born in Midlothian, Texas, Thelma married the love of her life, Allen Harrington and they were married for 54 years until his death in 2008. They lived in Dallas, Texas where they raised their two children, Scott and Stephanie. Thelma was a petite, bubbly powerhouse of energy, warmth and love and tirelessly devoted herself to her family and friends. Along the way, she worked as an elementary school administrator for the Dallas Public School district and then in the accounting department at Arco in Dallas.
Thelma and Allen moved from Dallas to Watkinsville, Georgia in 1998. Her four granddaughters were the shining light of her life and she was close to each one of them. Her sparkling personality and sharp wit were magnetic and she drew friends from near and far, making instantaneous connections with anyone she came into contact with. She adored traveling and thrived on seeing and doing new things and meeting friends. Thelma was a master at anything to do with a needle and thread and sewed, needlepointed, and knitted for years - and whipped up countless pairs of curtains. She was stylish and impeccably polished, and always ready for a good chat with friends of all ages; loved her precious audio books; Netflix and the BBC; and was there for everyone with a gorgeous smile and an infectious laugh.
Tireless and endlessly enthusiastic, Thelma made every gathering fun and full of laughs and her presence by the pool or on the porch will be missed beyond words.
Lovingly known to all as Gammy, Mimi or just Thelma, she is survived by her beloved family: son Scott and daughter Stephanie Cartwright; daughter-in-law, Meg Harrington and son-in-law John Cartwright and granddaughters Molly and Lily Harrington and Annie and Carie Cartwright.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made the Athens Regional Hospital Foundation.
