Terrance "Terry" Lindsey Floyd, of Athens, died on Monday, December 10, 2012. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Mary Lindsey Floyd and Roy Floyd Sr. When he was a young child, his family moved to New Bern, N.C., where his father opened a monument business. Later, they moved to Jasper to be near his grandparents and other family.
Terry graduated from Pickens County High School and attended Piedmont College and the University of Georgia. He was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War. He served aboard the U.S.S. Manchester and at the U.S. Naval Hospital on Guam. He was also a charter employee of the Environmental Protection Agency, in Athens, where he worked for 38 years; he formed many lasting friendships there.
Terry was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church for 51 years. He enjoyed swimming, diving, and water skiing, traveling, and in earlier years, hunting and fishing. One of his favorite things was the annual trip to the beach with his family. He was devoted to his family and will be profoundly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Rice Floyd; son, James Blanton Floyd, and his wife, Vickie Goetsch Floyd; grandson, Stephen James Floyd; granddaughter, Virginia Lindsey Floyd; sisters, Ann Floyd Stanfield, and her husband, Bob, of Jasper, and Jackie Floyd McGee, of Pelzer, S.C.; and many much-loved nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Mary Ruth Floyd; and his brothers, Roy Floyd Jr. and James M. Floyd.
Visitation will be 4:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, at Lord & Stephens East.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 13, at the Lord & Stephens East chapel, with interment at 4 p.m. in the Bold Spring United Methodist Church cemetery, in Franklin County.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to St. James United Methodist Church, 111 West Lake Dr., Athens, GA 30606.
