Ted Hughes was the sixth child of Marvin and Viola Hughes. He was born on July 31, 1943, in Frederick, Maryland. His family moved to Georgia when he was 6 years old. After spending time in the Navy, he moved to Arnoldsville, where he reconnected with his former fifth-grade sweetheart, Patsy Willoughby. They fell madly in love and were married 5 weeks later. They would have been married 60 years on November 15th.
As a young man, Ted dreamed of having a farm. His dream came true in 1965. He loved his cows and had a unique way of getting them to come. He used his voice and could be heard for miles around when herding them. He and Patsy were Farm Family of the Year in 1981 and in 2008. Ted was recognized nationwide for his innovative wagon-wheel pasture design for rotational grazing.
Ted was a member of Collier Baptist Church. He served as Deacon and Adult Men’s Sunday School Teacher. He and Patsy hosted the Collier Baptists Church Fall Festival for several years.
Ted was appointed to the Library Board which oversaw the construction of the new library in 1995. He was elected to the Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners.
Ted is survived by his wife Patsy, daughter Suzanne Hughes, grandchildren, Diana Hughes, David Gomez, Daniel and Kat Gomez, Tate Hughes, and Brooke Hughes, and great-grandchildren, Lorenzo Gomez and Nate Hughes. He is also survived by his brother Nevin Hughes, sister Jackie and Arley Dalton, and brother John and Irene Hughes.
