Teddy Lee Shanks, beloved husband, father and friend, passed away on Wednesday, January 18th, 2017 at his home in Watkinsville, GA, after a long illness.
Ted was born August 15, 1945, in West Helena, AR to Johnny and Vera Robertson Shanks, the third of six children: Bobby, Barbara, Teddy, Dianne, Carol, and Danny. He was a 1963 graduate of Rockmart High School in Rockmart, GA, and subsequently served in the United States Army. After graduating from Athens Technical College in Athens, GA, in 1979, Ted spent much of his professional career as a Radiation Safety Officer in the Environmental Safety Department of the University of Georgia, from which he retired in 2010 after 28 years of service.
On July 27, 1968, he married his childhood sweetheart, Crisanda Grogan Shanks, at the First Methodist Church of Rockmart, GA. They remained loving and constant companions until his passing.
Throughout his life, Ted loved sports and shared that love with his family. He was a four-sport letterman in high school, and later coached flag football, Little League baseball, rec basketball, swimming, softball, and soccer for his children. In his spare time, he loved fishing, golf, motorcycling, and creating a beautiful yard wherever he lived. He was an imaginative soul, writing poetry, developing games for his children that were great fun, and designing unique artworks out of wood. He was a lover of nature, often taking his family hiking, picking blackberries, exploring rivers, and beachcombing for shells. He always put his family at the center of his life.
Ted is survived by his wife, Cris, of Watkinsville, GA; his sons Jeff Stelian-Shanks of North Bergen, NJ, and Sam Shanks of Monroe, NC; his daughter Jenilee Stanley-Shanks of Richmond, VA; their spouses Catalin, Philecia and Renata, respectively; his sisters Barbara Surface, Dianne Shanks and Carol Shanks; his mother-in-law Catheryne Mundy Grogan of Athens, GA; his grandsons Thomas Shanks and Cooper Shanks of Monroe, NC, and Tristan Stanley-Shanks of Richmond, VA; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in remembrance of Ted may be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (http://www.myasthenia.org).
