Sybil Gooch

Sybil Gabriel Gooch, 94, died peacefully on Sunday, November 21, 2021.

She was born in Oglethorpe County to the late Julius and Mozelle Gabriel. She was the wife of the late Luther Gooch, who she married during WWII. Mrs. Gooch graduated from Winterville School in 1944 and then Johnson Business School in Athens, GA.

She was preceded in death by her three children, Janet Goss, Jerry Gooch, and Ronnie Gooch, and also by a granddaughter, Betsy Gooch.

She is survived by sisters, Betty Anderson, Dot Busbin, Carole Pattinson; brothers, Harry Gabriel (Jane-Marie) and Larry Gabriel (Beverly); grandson, Mark; granddaughter, Angie (Tim); seven great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren. She was known and loved by many as “Gran” and enjoyed a long and active life volunteering and serving in many positions at her church, East Athens Baptist, and at the cancer center at Piedmont (Athens Regional) Hospital.

A drop-in viewing will be held Tuesday, November 23 from 9:00 until 10:30 AM at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, EAST.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Oconee Hill Cemetery with Rev. Tony Lee and Rev. Matt Siple officiating. Pallbearers will be nephews, Tony Busbin, Cecil Gabriel, Jason Gabriel, Keith Gabriel, Rusty Gabriel, and Scott Gabriel.

Sybil’s family would like to express special thanks to the staff and all her friends of Hampton House in Colbert for the care and good life she received while living there.
