Steven David Cox, 67, of Athens, Georgia passed away on December 19, 2020 after a brave bout with cancer.
Steve was born to Christine and Ernest Cox in Atlanta, GA. He is predeceased by his parents and only brother Charles. Steve will be laid to rest beside his parents at Decatur Cemetery.
Steve was an avid golfer, even enjoying watching golf every week on TV. His game especially improved after he retired from 17 years working at UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music in 2015. But golfing still played second fiddle to his love of music.
Steve majored in Instrumental Music Education at Florida State University, allowing him to entertain friends and other Meet Up members with his fascinating knowledge of music and musicians.
His music presented him with an opportunity to travel to the Middle East with the Florida State Bands to perform before President Assad, father of the current leader in Damascus, Syria. They left there by special request to perform for King Hussein in Aman, Jordan. Steve performed trumpet in the marching and concert bands.
Steve’s love of music soothed his soul. It spilled over into an entire room filled with his guitar collection, each of which had her own look, sound, and story. Steve will be sorely missed by the piano owners and church people who knew him as their reliable piano technician for 40+ years anywhere he lived.
It speaks well of Steve that, interwoven in all his interests, were his uncommon friendships. In his last months, friends found him up three flights of stairs, and brought him out to a country cottage when the stairs became too much for him and his longtime canine friend, George: uncommon friends, even when it required facing mortality to bring gifts, music, laughter, and encouragement.
Steve will be missed by those who knew and loved him well.
