Athens, GA - Dr. Stanley Vezey died peacefully in his sleep on June 4, 2013 from an extended illness.
Stan was born in College Station, Texas on September 23, 1923 to Edward Earl Vezey and Myrtle Hester Vezey. He graduated from Texas A&M with a DVM degree in 1944. He entered military service during WWII and continued his service until 1946. Following his military service, he joined the United Nations Relief Agency taking horses and mules across the Atlantic to war torn Europe.
Dr. Vezey spent his professional 50 years career in the poultry industry. He spent his last years at the PDRC at the University of Georgia. He was an active member of AVMA, AAAP, GVMA, and was a professor emeritus.
In 1955, Dr. Vezey was named "Man of the Year" by the North American Game Bird Association for his service to the gamebird industry. Stanley was an avid bird hunter, active in several gun clubs, and was the Georgia State Handicap and Singles champion in 1981.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Eloise Dromgoole of Sour Lake, Texas; and son, CDR Dale G. Vezey, US Navy, of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eleanor; son, Allen Vezey (Jean) of North Pole, Alaska; grandchildren, Sarah Schacher (Daniel) of Fairbanks, Alaska, Josephine Bahnke (Dennis) of Nome, Alaska, Russel Hardy of North Pole, Alaska; sister, Betty Nedderman (Wendell) of Arlington, Texas; brother, Edward Earl Vezey, Jr. of Moore, Oklahoma; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East at 2:00PM on Sunday, June 9, 2013 followed by a memorial service at 3:00PM with the Rev. Bill Hayes officiating.
