Mr. Stanley "Stan" Luke Mills, age 60, formerly of Athens passed away on Sunday morning, February 5, 2017 at Baptist Medical Center on Amelia Island, FL.
Born in Athens, GA, he was the only son and youngest of two children born to the late Marion Wilson Mills and Ann Perry Mills. He was a graduate of Athens Christian Schools before attending the University of Georgia where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Engineering and Forestry. After college he accepted employment as a Structural Engineer at Trust Joist Corporation in Valdosta, GA. While working in Valdosta he met Cindy Dianne English, a coworker, whom he would marry in 1984. The newlyweds made their first home in Valdosta where they remained until moving to Atlanta in 1993 when he joined Atlanta Structural Products. In the ensuing years he also worked as an independent contractor coordinating plant startups for 84 Lumber, Boise Lumber and as a Forensic Analyst before joining the Nassau County Building and Code Enforcement Department as an Engineering Inspector.
He, his wife and family had spent time on Amelia Island since 2010 and became permanent residents after accepting the position with Nassau County.
He had been a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church in Athens, GA.
Mr. Mills enjoyed the out of doors and had spent a year after high school canoeing and hiking through parts of Canada, Alaska and Europe. He enjoyed flint knapping, studying ancient civilizations, primitive weaponry, metal casting, wood working and camping. Mr. Mills was a Lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and was a Certified NRA Pistol Instructor.
He leaves behind his wife, Cindy English Mills, Amelia Island, FL, their children, Gabriel Wilson Mills, Denver, CO, Samuel Carlton Mills, Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, HI, Luke Anthony Mills, Amelia Island, FL, Olivia Dianne Mills, Cumberland Island, GA, a sister, Kathy Anthony, Sandersville, GA and a brother, Mark Lawrence, Peachtree City, GA.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2017 in the West Chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, 1211 Jimmy Daniel Road, Bogart, GA with Reverend William Fields, officiating.
Mr. Mills will be laid to rest in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
His family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
