Carlton - Shirley Ann Black Mathews, age 70, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2009. A well-loved fixture in the Enterprise community, Mrs. Mathews was born in Oglethorpe County and spent all of her life there, surrounded by a close-knit family and cadre of friends. She was a homemaker, a retired school bus driver and, for many years, her motherís primary caregiver. An active member of Burtís United Methodist Church, she enjoyed people and was known for baking cakes for friends and neighbors.
Mrs. Mathews was born March 11, 1939, graduated from Oglethorpe County High School in 1957 and married Maurice Mathews in 1959. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Marguerite Black; and a brother, Dr. Wayne Black.
Mrs. Mathews is survived by her husband, Maurice; two sons, Terry Mathews (and his wife, Margaret) of Atlanta and Wendell Mathews (and his wife, Sherry); grandson, Ryan Mathews; and step-grandson, Grant McCannon, all of Enterprise; sister-in-law, Barbara Fogg; niece, Breigh Black Smith; and nephew, Ben Black.
The family will receive friends, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Lord & Stephens Oglethorpe Chapel in Crawford on Tuesday, October 20.
The funeral will be at Burt's United Methodist Church in Oglethorpe County at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ben Black, Ryan Mathews, Stewart Bridges, Doug Mathews, Bob Fogg and Mike Kantor.
