Shirley Marie Carter went home to be with the Lord on March 12, 2015. She was born in 1942 in Orlando, Florida. She was a resident of Athens and then Watkinsville since 1974. She married Mike Carter in 1961 and devoted her life to him, her four children and grandchildren.
Shirley was a diligent and faithful follower of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her passion for God's Word was evident as she taught the Bible to international students and to children through the ministry of International Friends and yearly Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed discipling young married women, teaching her Sunday School girls, and serving at a weekly college bible study. She was a frequent speaker with Christian Women's Clubs. Sunday morning worship at Living Hope Church, Monday night Bible Study at a friend's home and her Tuesday morning prayer group were vital parts of her week. Countless college students looked forward to her delicious meals after church. Shirley's gracious hospitality was a gift to visiting scholars and their families from countries all over the globe. She faithfully prayed for her family, friends and missionaries around the world. She took delight in time with family, gardening, sewing, classical music and cooking. Her favorite destinations with Mike, family and friends were the Bahamas and Europe.
Survivors include her husband Mike, three daughters, Dede (David) Holt, Sue Martin, Melanie (John) Higley, and a son, Lt. Col. Chris (Celeste) Carter. "Gram Shirley" was blessed with eleven grandchildren who adored her: Catherine(Isaac) Plemons, Michael, Josiah and Sarah Holt, Shanna and Matthew Martin, Hayden and Olivia Higley, Jackson, Caleb and Gavin Carter. She is also survived by a sister, Patsy, and several dear nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Chauncey and Juanita Wilson and her sister Dianne.
Shirley was deeply loved by so many. She was a constant source of wisdom and encouragement. Many people were blessed by the truths of God's love that she shared so freely. Her children admired her greatly and cherished her wise counsel and her unfailing love. Oh, how we will miss her!
A celebration of her life and legacy will be Sunday afternoon, March 29, 2015 at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary at Watkinsville First Baptist Church. Visitation with the family will follow.
Memorial donations may be made to Watkinsville First Baptist Church (memo line: Missions), 1610 Simonton Bridge Road, Watkinsville, GA 30677. Gifts will be given to missionary families very close to Shirley's heart.
Shirley is now with the One she loves. With unveiled face, she sees Him. Now her soul is satisfied.
