Sarah Gillis Scott, age 67, of Athens, died on Tuesday, January 29, 2013.
Mrs. Scott was born in Alma, but lived all of her early childhood in Ware County and graduated from Ware County High School. She was the daughter of the late Nathaniel L. Gillis and Olga Dunlap Gillis, and sister to the late Jack Gillis and Natalie Minchew. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, and a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin B. "Laddie" Scott; children and their spouses, Marie Scott (Mark) Dahill, of Pendleton, S.C., Nathaniel B. "Nat" (Jamie) Scott, of Brunswick, and David A. (LeAnne) Scott, of Jefferson; sisters, Myra Rouse and Joyce Schofill; brothers, Jimmy, Johnny, and Neal Gillis; and grandchildren, Drew, Ben, and Jake Dahill, Ryan, Sarah, and Gwenna Scott, and Mike Alonzo.
Sarah was a generous woman who gave of her time in many ways. She was active for many years in Junior League in Kingsport, Tenn., served in the hospital auxiliary for many years at Holston Medical Center, delivered meals to shut-ins through the Meals-on-Wheels program, and served as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Central Presbyterian Church, in Athens.
Her many interests included tennis, bridge, reading, travel, needlepoint, decorating, and gourmet cooking. The role she was most proud of, however, was that of loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She devoted much of her time to her family and friends, who adored her.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, February 1, at Lord & Stephens West.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, at Central Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Presbyterian Church, the American Cancer Society for Pancreatic Cancer, or the Loran Smith Cancer Center.
