Sara Strickland Poole of Athens, who celebrated her 95th birthday New Year's Day, passed away Jan. 22, 2012, after a brief illness. She is survived by her husband of nearly 73 years, Robert Dee Poole, two daughters and one son and their spouses: Robbie and Dan Lord of Marietta; John and Susan Poole of Lavonia; and Linda and Hayden Drewry of Bogart; six grandchildren: Jeffrey (and Rosalind) Lord of Roanoke, Va.; Tracye Lord of Buford; Sharon Dunn of Canton; James (and Kristina) Poole of Loganville; Thomas Drewry of Watkinsville and Sherri (and Matt) O'Mahoney of Mableton; 10 great-grandchildren: Daniel and Abby Lord; Jordan, Taylor and Andrew Dunn; Matthew, Emma and Kathryn Poole; and Sara and Ryan O'Mahoney; sister-in-law Jean Strickland of Watkinsville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was born in Jonesboro, Ga., Jan. 1, 1917, daughter of Will and Willie Simpson Strickland. She is predeceased by three brothers and a sister. Mrs. Poole graduated from Russell High School in East Point and was a full time homemaker. She was a lifelong Southern Baptist, active in Sunday School and missions. Upon Mr. Poole's retirement from Delta Air Lines after a 40-year-career, they moved to Lake Hartwell near Lavonia and later to Watkinsville. She is well-known in any community where she has lived for her six-layer cake with chocolate icing, her chocolate chip cookies and her willingness to care for any friend or member of her family. She was especially fond of the babies in her family and she collected dolls, made quilts for her granddaughters and treated her visiting grandchildren to trips to the country store for candy.
