Athens - Sara Louise Lewis, 81, passed away Friday, April 14, 2006.
A native of Clarke County, she was the daughter of the late Herschel and Bertha Lewis and was preceded in death by her sisters, Dot Tolbert and Lorene McElroy.
Miss Lewis retired from the Athens Recreational Parks Department and played for the Athens High School Basketball Team from 1940 thru 1943, a professional softball pitcher for the Chicago Blue Birds; a softball pitcher for the Lorelei Ladies of Atlanta Ball League for 25 years, and was known as one of the nationís best womenís softball pitchers during a 25-year span. She was inducted in the Athens Athletic Hall of Fame Inaugural class of 2000 and a member of Oconee Street Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Oconee Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Finger officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2:00 thru 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, L.H. Jr. and Jean Lewis and numerous nieces and nephews.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Association or to the Athens Clarke County Youth Recreation Department.
