Sara Downs

d. March 18, 2016

Sara Virginia Mathis Downs passed away at her home March 18, 2016 after a lengthy illness.

She was born on September 20, 1925 in the Rose Hill Community of Oconee County. She was the youngest of six children born to John Candler Mathis and Eula Forest Elder Mathis. When she was a young woman, she joined Antioch Christian Church, and continued to be active in the Fun and Travel Club and Christian Women's Fellowship until her illness. She married Brice Thomas Downs, and they had one daughter, Robin Teresa Downs Latawiec. Family and faith were important to her and she took great pride in anything she attempted. She sought perfection in all of her hobbies which included sewing, ceramic painting, and keeping her yards perfectly manicured. She showed great patience and expertise in the beautiful recital gowns she sewed for her daughter, or simple things like making doll clothes, and outfits made for her 13 year old companion, "Precious".

She was a homemaker and operated a poultry farm until her husband's health declined. After Brice's death in 1974, she worked at Reliance Electric until her retirement. She was always available to help her sisters, brothers and a multitude of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, J. C. Mathis and John I. Mathis, and three sisters, Viola (Jake) McRee, Rosetta (Aubrey) Huff, and Eula Mae Mathis, and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Catherine Downs (Harold) Hardeman, and Mrs. Eula Mae (Vernon) Downs.

She is survived by her daughter, Robin Latawiec of Columbus, GA; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Sara J. (Milton) Downs, Mrs. Louise (J.C.) Mathis and Mrs. Geraldine (John I.) Mathis and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 21, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Antioch Christian Church. Interment will follow at Johnson United Methodist Church, Flat Rock Road, Watkinsville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday, March 20 at Lord and Stephens, WEST.
