Athens, GA - Sandra Jean Lynch, long-time house director at the University of Georgia's Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, passed away on Dec. 8 due to complications following surgery.
Mrs. Lynch grew up in Hammond, Ind., and attended George Rogers Clark High School, where she served as a varsity cheerleader. She received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Purdue University, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She met her late husband, Robert Lynch, at Purdue, and in the course of his employment the couple lived in various locations, including Wilton, Conn., and Barrington, Ill.
Prior to becoming house director at Kappa Alpha Theta - where her aunt, Mary Alice Hannon, had recently finished a long tenure as house director - Mrs. Lynch owned and operated a popular fudge shop in Weston, Vt. Early in her marriage, she also taught physical education in the Hammond city schools.
An avid reader and hiker of the trails at UGA's State Botanical Garden, Mrs. Lynch's favorite hobby was cooking - and both her family and the sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta were the beneficiaries of her culinary abilities.
Writing on Mrs. Lynch's Facebook page, one sorority member thanked her for going "over and above any of her duties to really care about us just like a mom would. She even made us chocolate bunnies to decorate the dining room tables around Easter. She loved us all just like daughters, and was so sweet to stay in touch with so many of the girls after we all graduated."
Another sorority member recalled when Mrs. Lynch "typed out her Black Bean Soup recipe for me because she saw that I would go back for 2nds and 3rds when it was served. I still have the recipe!"
Mrs. Lynch's son Jeff and his wife Diane Holley Lynch of Lewisville, Texas, are thankful to have been with her before her surgery, enjoying yet another of her wonderful home-cooked meals, along with a family card game and lots of laughter. They were by Mrs. Lynch's side when she passed away.
Mrs. Lynch is also survived by her other son, Eric Lynch of Chicago, Ill., who was with her in the days leading up to her surgery; by her granddaughter Mackenzie and grandson Robert. Mrs. Lynch's sister Joanne Hostetter lives in Athens and will also miss her terribly.
A memorial service to commemorate Mrs. Lynch's life is being planned for Athens sometime after the year-end holidays
