Early on the morning of August 4, 2021, adored husband and father Samuel Herman Dabbs Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Statham Ga. His wife of fifty years, Kathy, and her sister Lorel were present during his passing. He was 75 years old.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Lynn Kapke Dabbs, one daughter, one son-in-law, and three granddaughters. The family includes daughter Jennifer Smith, her husband Cameron Smith, as well as their three daughters, Emma, Alyssa, and Brooke Smith.
Sam was born on August 28, 1945 to Samuel Sr. and Flonnie Dabbs of Alabama in Tupelo, Mississippi. He was the only child of Sam Sr. and Flonnie. Being raised in Alabama with parents as educators, Sam learned the value of education, hard work, determination, and the importance of integrity. He graduated from McEachern High School where his father was principal. He went on to further his education at the University of Georgia, earning a bachelor’s degree in the area of business. After attending UGA, Sam continued his education and earned a law degree from John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, Georgia. After completing law school he worked as an attorney for the Southern Company for 36 years.
Sam grew up in the Methodist Church, was confirmed at age 13, and was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church.
Sam loved telling stories, sharing childhood memories, and fellowshipping with neighbors. UGA football games and sitting on his porch at Big Canoe looking over the mountains were two favorite passions he shared with family and friends. He was an admired family man and his granddaughters were the light of his life. He was loved by all who knew him.
A memorial service celebrating Sam’s life will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Athens First United Methodist Church.
