Athens - Ruth Major McCreary, 86, wife of the late John Rafferty McCreary, passed away May 26, 2007, in Morningside of Athens.
She was born on October 12, 1920, in Washington, D.C. She was the daughter of the late Elmer B. and Pearl Richardson Brammell. A former resident of Hyattsville, Md., Oxon Hill, Md., and Ocean City, N.J., where she retired in 1973, Ruth moved to Athens in 1994, to be near her son and his family.
Prior to her retirement, Mrs. McCreary was the church secretary at Margate Community Church in Margate, N.J., where she was an officer in the Dorcas Guild. In the Washington area, she was the secretary at Oxon Hill United Methodist Church in Oxon Hill, Md., the librarian at Potomac High School in Potomac, Md., in the 1960's, and the secretary for the dean of the College of Arts and sciences of the University of Maryland at College Park, Md., in the 1950's.
Approaching life with a bright smile, she tended to see the glass as half full instead of half empty. She was a caring, generous and kind hearted presence in the lives of those around her.
Survivors include her son, Don R. McCreary, of Athens; and two grandchildren, John McCreary and Michy McCreary.
