Athens, GA - Royal Akins, age 80, of Athens, GA died Monday, December 3, 2007.
Mr. Akins was born and raised in Madison County, GA and after serving in the U.S. Army, he began a 23-year career at Rich's Department Store where he was a buyer in the men's clothing department. After leaving Rich's, Mr. Akins was involved in several business enterprises in the men's clothing industry and later in the automotive trade. Before moving to the Athens area he lived with his family in Redan, GA. He was active in his community and church, serving several years as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, and numerous leadership positions. Mr. Akins was preceded in death by daughter Donna Rice of Athens and brother, Harold Akins of Winder.
He is survived by wife of 59 years, Mary Akins; son, Wayne and Debbie Akins of Norcross; daughter, Nancy Akins of Birmingham; son, Joe and Patricia Akins of Danielsville; sister, Mary and Verdis Puckett of Buford; brother, Roger and Charlsie Akins of Flowery Branch; sister, Jeffie Akins of Buford; 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 6, 2007 at 11 AM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, EAST, with the Rev. Crist Camden officiating. A graveside service will be held at the Zoar Methodist Church, Stapleton GA at 2:30 PM.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 5 from 6:30 until 8:30 PM at the funeral home.
