Roy Thurman Ward, Jr., M.D.

June 6, 1922 — April 8, 2015

Roy Thurman Ward, Jr., M.D., passed away Wednesday, April 8, at his home in Watkinsville. He was suffering from a series of physical conditions inherent in a person of his advanced years. He would have been 93 on June 6, 2015.
His parents were Roy T. Ward and Eleanor Meaders Ward. He was born in Watkinsville, graduated as valedictorian of the 1939 OCHS class, graduated from UGA with a masters degree in chemistry, graduate from the University of Georgia Medical College, and was a veteran of WWII. After practicing medicine in both Baltimore and Washington, D.C., he was induced by the owners of the Oconee Enterprise to return to Watkinsville. He established his practice in a new office facing Court House Square he designed himself.
He is survived by his brother, Albert Wimpy Ward, Watkinsville; his nephew Alan Gene Hill, Cincinnati, OH; first cousins Jane Ward Green, Union Springs, AL and Bruce Hudson Parrish, Atlanta: his nephews Eric Allsopp Ward, Los Angeles: Keith Alexander Ward, Bangkok, Thailand: and Andrew Kenneth Ward, Watkinsville. His sister, Florine Elizabeth Ward Hill Malta, passed away in 1995.
In addition to his medical work as an old-fashioned country doctor, he was extremely well-know for his talents as an artist. He painted in both oils and watercolors. He was an expert in the production of block prints and a noted collector of antique Japanese prints. He recognized the artistry in ordinary quilts produced by local artisans and arranged for exhibits in museums around the state.
Dr. Ward's artistic talents expanded into the production of books featuring both historic photographs and reproductions of photographs of his many landscape paintings. These were frequently made available to the public in book form at cost.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, April 11 at 2:00 PM at Lord & Stephens West Chapel, 1211 Jimmy Daniel Rd. in Watkinsville. Messages will be rendered by several of his closest friends. The burial service will be at the Watkinsville cemetery. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made toward improvements to the new Watkinsville Woods park. Checks should be made payable to the "City of Watkinsville for the Improvements to Watkinsville Woods" (tax deductible). This acreage once formed a portion of Dr. Ward's estate. Lord & Stephens West is in charge of arrangements. www.lordandstephens.com
