Rollin Lee Thaxton, 95, of Lexington, passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2021.
Mr. Thaxton was a lifelong resident of Oglethorpe County, born on April 24, 1926, to Rollin and Loudell Mathews Thaxton. His second home was Lexington Baptist Church, where he was an active member from the age of sixteen. Retiring from the GA Department of Transportation after 32 years as a highway engineer, he began a second career as a bookkeeper for Germany’s Hardware Store. He was a certified land surveyor in the county for many years, an accomplishment he was most proud of. Rollin was a WWII Army veteran, drafted at age eighteen in 1944. He was in a foxhole in Germany when the war ended there in 1946. He kept his army issued Bible in his pocket at all times, feeling that it protected him.
Survivors include his wife of seventy years, Mary; children: Scott (Julie) Thaxton and Lynn (Sam) Waldron; grandchildren: Joshua Thaxton, Steve Waldron, Nikki Knight, Heather Waldron and Patrick Thaxton; eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Lexington Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time. Interment will follow at Clark Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to Lexington Baptist Church.
