Robert L. Somers, 69, passed away at his home on Tuesday, September 20, 2016. He was born on August 14, 1947 in Greensboro, North Carolina and lived in Athens, Georgia since 1990.
He is preceded in death by his father Vernon L. Somers, his mother Violet Murphy Somers and his brother William Somers. Survivors include his wife, Jessica Jackson Somers; two sons Alan Lee and Andy Lee; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Somers was an "Educator" in the truest sense of the word. He earned a graduate degree in Comparative Literature from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His last academic position was in the College of Education at Appalachian State University where he mentored education leadership postdoctoral students and managed several national projects including Telementoring Services delivered via satellite, creation of Developmental Studies training materials distributed through video tape and audio cassettes, and an Exxon Research Grant working with major universities across the country.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Somers on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at the Lord & Stephens-West Funeral Home in Athens, Georgia.
He will be interred in the Lakeview Memorial Park in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Monday, September 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
