Robert Dee Poole

Robert D. Poole, formerly of East Point, Lavonia and Athens passed away November 6, 2013 at the age of 96. He was preceded by his wife of 73 years, Sara Strickland Poole. Mr. Poole is survived by two daughters and one son and their spouses: Robbie and Dan Lord of Marietta, John and Susan Poole of Lavonia, and Linda and Hayden Drewry of Bogart: six grandchildren Jeffrey (and Rosalind ) Lord of Roanoke, Va.; Tracye Lord of Buford; Sharon Dunn of Canton; James (and Kristina) Poole of Loganville; Thomas Drewry of Watkinsville and Sherri (and Matt) O'Mahoney of Newnan ; and ten great grandchildren: Daniel and Abby Lord; Jordan, Taylor and Andrew Dunn; Matthew, Emma, and Kathryn Poole; and Sara and Ryan O'Mahoney; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Poole was born in Campti, LA September 20, 1917, the son of Jenny Louise and John Alfred Poole. He is predeceased by a sister, Ruby Poole Tabacchi of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was retired from Delta Airlines after a 40 year career as a mechanic, having joined the company in Monroe, LA. In 1937 when it still had crop dusting operations. Late in life he noted that when his Delta career began, if all the company's passenger planes (five Lockheed tens) were in the air and full there would be 50 people flying. By the time he retired he had spent many years as a jet age mechanic.
He was the last survivor of eight Delta employees who founded the Delta Credit Union, now the Delta Community Credit Union
Mr. Poole was a lifelong Southern Baptist, serving as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Lavonia and at First Baptist Church of East Point.
Visitation will be at Lord and Stephens WEST Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 1:00 until 2:00 PM. Services will follow at Lord and Stephens, WEST, at 2:00 PM and will be officiated by the Reverends Bill Stacey and A. B. Sawyer. Memorials may be made to Beech Haven Baptist Church Missions Fund or Christian Concern Fund.
