Athens, GA - Robert Murrel Mundy Sr., 78, beloved husband of Maxine Rampey Mundy, died June 8, 2011. He was born March 28, 1933, to the late Charles Mundy and Gwendolyn Wentworth Hendrix Mundy of Ware Shoals, SC. Murrel graduated from Clemson University in 1959 with a BS degree in Industrial Engineering. Prior to completing his education at Clemson, he served in the United States Army. After graduation, he began his professional career with the Kroger Co., later owning several successful businesses in Watkinsville, GA. Murrel stayed actively involved in his church, St. James United Methodist, and was one of the founding members of the Men's Breakfast Club Group, which he later served as President. He also gave his time as a former member of the Civitans Club and as President to the Beechwood Merchants Association and the local schools. Murrel was a loving father, grandfather, and uncle and a very special and generous friend who will be missed by the many people who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Charles Eugene Mundy of Richmond, VA. He is survived by his wife Maxine Rampey Mundy; three children: daughter Susan (John) Ranson, Columbia, SC; son Robert (Bob & Milby) Mundy, Columbia, SC; and son William (Bill) Mundy, Athens, GA; four grandchildren: Matthew Mundy, Columbia, SC; Ellen Mundy, Columbia, SC; Nicholas Ranson, Athens, GA; and Margaret Carter Mundy, Athens, GA; and two nieces: Lauren Mundy Coan, Ghent, NY, and Christy Mundy Scott, Richmond, VA.
The family expresses its thanks to Odyssey Hospice Care, particularly Kathy Callahan R.N., Rhonda Brown and Betty Stevens, C.N.A.'s whose kind and compassionate care have meant so much.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20, 2011, in the Chapel at Greenville Memorial Gardens, located at 7784 Augusta Road, Greenville, SC, with the Reverend Christie Gravely officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to St. James United Methodist Church at 111 Westlake Drive, Athens, GA 30606 or Odyssey Hospice Care at 855 Gaines School Road, Athens, GA 30605.
