Robert Caldwell (Bobby) Maxwell, 87, passed away in Dublin, GA on January 20, 2012. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Lord & Stephens East Funeral Home, 4355 Lexington Rd, Athens, GA. Interment will follow at Clarke-Maxwell Cemetery, Lexington, GA. The Rev. Dr. Ted Staton will officiate. Visitation will be on Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Bobby Maxwell was born in Lexington, GA on Sept. 13, 1924. He was the son of the late Edgar James Maxwell, Sr. and Winifred Smith Maxwell. He had lived in Lexington all his life, and only recently moved to Dublin due to health needs.
Mr. Maxwell is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marie Nix Maxwell; two daughters: Jane Maxwell Wilson and Barbara Maxwell (Paul)Riddle; four grandchildren: Lisa (Jay)Wilson King , Jennifer Riddle (James) Geiger, Brian (Mallory)Wilson, and John Paul Riddle; four great-grandchildren: Lillian Marie Geiger, Walker McClain Wilson, Robert Charles Geiger, and Olivia Rachael Wilson; one sister, Winifred Maxwell (Bill)Martin and one brother, George David (Diana) Maxwell; and many nieces and nephews.
Bobby graduated from Meson Academy and North Georgia College. He joined the Army Air Corps and became a P-51 Mustang pilot during WWII. He advanced to the rank of captain, and later served in the Army Reserve. He and Marie owned Maxwell's, Inc. Later Bobby started Athens Aviation, Inc. and Cherokee Airways. Bobby was a member of Lexington Presbyterian Church and served as Elder for over 60 years. He loved Lexington and served on the city council for 21 years. He was involved in numerous historic and community projects including: Meson Academy Memorial Park, Veterans Memorial at the Courthouse, restoration of the Depot in Crawford and the Lexington Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Time Capsule marking 200th Anniversary of Oglethorpe County, Shaking Rock Park. He was instrumental in founding the International Swift Association. He was a member of the American Legion, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Chamber of Commerce, and Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) .
