Robert Derrell Hancock, Jr., of Bishop, Georgia, passed away April 27, 2024.
Robert grew up in Winterville, Georgia, the oldest of Derrell and Alice Hancock’s three children. He possessed a playful mischievousness which thrilled his brother David and sister Jacque. A love of horses, cars, and tractors began in his adolescent years and would endure throughout his lifetime.
Robert dedicated his life to the service of others – professionally at Heyward Allen Motor Company for 50 years as well as personally offering a helping hand to many in need. A natural athlete with a competitive spirit, he played baseball in the front yard, Little League, and church league. As an adult Robert enjoyed all sports and spent many years officiating high school basketball and football.
Above all Robert cherished spending time with his family. Some of his favorite moments included waterskiing at his father’s lake house, with perhaps a questionable use of children in the waterski pyramid. Family get togethers might involve turning flips at the pool, playing heated card games, or watching college football, but they always contained laughter and hugs. A lover of animals, he delighted his four-legged family members with copious treats, but never a bite of his ice cream.
Robert defied aging and lived life to its fullest, riding his motorcycle and horse as often as possible in his retirement years. He inspires his loved ones to follow their own joy, never forgetting to maintain a backbone of integrity and compassion.
Raised in Tuckston United Methodist Church, more recently Robert found fellowship at Union Christian Church in Watkinsville. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, David Hancock. Robert’s spirit lives on in his beloved wife of 47 years, Susan Hancock, his children, Susan Tolbert (Russell Tolbert), Mike Hancock (Miranda Hancock), Nicole Hancock (Rick Chen), Margot Hancock Arroyo (Jeremy Arroyo), five grandchildren, Lauren McCoy (Matt McCoy), Alison Tolbert (Max McCroskey), Nash Hancock, Brooks Hancock, Landry Hancock, one great-grandchild Emery McCoy, his sister Jacquelyn Hancock House (Dr. Richard House), and many special extended family members.
