Robert Reid Fincher, 63, husband of Shelley Fincher, died Tuesday, November 6, 2018. Born in Memphis, TN, he was the son of Sara Jeannese Fincher of Memphis, TN and the late Robert Knox Fincher, Jr.
Dr. Fincher received his Bachelors and Masters from the University of Tennessee and his Doctorate from the University of Missouri in Plant Breeding and Genetics. Prior to moving to the Athens area he was employed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International in Johnston, Iowa in various leadership roles and prior to that, worked as a corn breeder in Union City, TN for Pioneer Hi-Bred. He retired from the University of Georgia as Director of the Technology Commercialization Office and was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. Survivors in addition to his wife and mother include two children who he loved with all his heart: Melanie Fincher of Athens, Davis Fincher of Bishop; sisters: Carole Fincher and Susan Fincher of Memphis, TN. Rob had many interests, including blues and soul music from his hometown of Memphis, war history, and University of Tennessee Volunteer and Georgia Bulldogs sports. He left an indelible mark on this world and will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 10AM at Mars Hill Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Oconee Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 on Friday, November 9, 2018 at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated as well as memorial contributions to The Blues Foundation and Franklin County Habitat for Humanity.
