Robert Eugene Clute was born in Earlville, Iowa on July 12, 1924, the son of Henry and Leta (Allen) Clute, died on February 2, 2011. Dr. Clute was a member of the U.S. Army from 1943-1946. He received a B.A. from the University of Alabama in 1947, a M.A. from George Washington University in 1948, and a Ph.D. from Duke University in 1957. He was employed as a selector for the U.S. Displaced Persons Commission in Frankfurt, Germany from 1948-1950; as Air Intelligence Specialist for the U.S. Air Force in Austria from 1950-1954; as professor, Tulane University from 1958-1959, University of Nevada from 1959-1962, University of Georgia from 1963-1993, Chairman of Political Science Department, 1972-1975,Chairman of Social Science Division from 1982-1983, Professor Emeritus in 1993.
Dr. Clute was an American Specialist to Anglophone Africa, Cultural Affairs Division, U.S. Department of State in 1977 and a U.S. Information Agency Lecturer to West German Universities in 1986. He was a Fullbright Scholar from 1967-1968 in Sierra Leone and had numerous publications on International Law and Third World Development. He was a Danforth Associate, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Alpha Theta, Pi Sigma Alpha, and Phi Beta Delta.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Doris Reams Clute. Survivors include his son, Robert E. Clute, Jr., his daughter-in-law, Janet Roth Clute, his daughter, Andrea Reams Clute Correll, son-in-law, Lee Correll, grandsons, Robert E. Clute, III, Matthew Zane Clute, Andrew Lee Correll, and granddaughter, Charlotte Nora Clute, and sister, Joyce Harbaugh.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Saturday, February 5, at 11 A.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Clute/Nigro Fund at the University of Georgia, Athens, Ga. 30602.
