Robert Dixon Brown Jr

May 28, 1933 — September 17, 2013

Robert Dixon Brown Jr., a retired University of Georgia professor, died Tuesday evening in Athens. Bob was born in Palo Alto, CA May 28, 1938, the son of the late Robert Dixon and Natalie Thornton Brown. After graduation from Tuscaloosa High School, he attended the University of Alabama, earning Bachelor's and Master's degrees in History. Bob's intellect and love of learning was recognized in his selection as a Fulbright Scholar and election to the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Upon completing his education, Bob worked first in the National Security Administration, then at System Development Corporation. He moved to Athens in 1967, after accepting a position with the University of Georgia in the Center for Small Business Computer Development and finished his career as a professor in the Management Information Systems Department at the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business. While teaching, he developed strong relationships with many of his students which continued long after their graduation and his retirement. More than a teacher, Bob was a mentor to these young people, showing concern for and devotion to not only their education, but also to their overall well-being. In addition to teaching, Bob enjoyed classical music. He loved bowling, and was in the John Nixon League for years. More recently, he received the Silver Eagles Bowling Club's Award for Valor. He enjoyed travel, both in the United States and abroad. Bob leaves his wife of 54 years, Patricia Canavan Brown; son and daughter-in-law, David and Martha Brown of Marietta; grandsons Zachary K. Brown of Findlay, OH and M. Jordan Shreiner of Marietta. The family will receive visitors at 1.p.m. Saturday, September 21 at Lord & Stephens East, 4355 Lexington Road, Athens. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel, with interment immediately following at Athens Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Georgia's Franklin College of Arts & Sciences' Hugh Hodgson School of Music or to the UGA Symphony Orchestra.
