Richard Herndon Smith, Jr., age 71 of Stephens, GA went home to be with
his Lord and Savior Saturday, March 5, 2016 after a two year battle with cancer.
He was known as Smitty and Papa Smith to most. He was a precious, Godly man that loved much and was loved much. He was a hard-working, Jesus loving, family loving man and a great example to many.
He was born February 22, 1945 in Oglethorpe County to the late Herndon and Margaret Smith. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a meat cutter by trade. He owned and operated Smitty's Processing for over twenty years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Alton Smith.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of forty-seven years, Joan Smith; daughter, Myra and son-in-law, Walter Coley of Stephens, GA; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Doug and Rena Smith and Leo and April Smith, all of Elberton, GA; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sarah and Ed Siegler of Elberton, GA and Deannie and Jimmy Wilhite of Powder Springs, GA; two brothers-in-law, Ronald Cofer of Athens, GA and Lamar Cofer of Carlton, GA; sister-in-law, Linda Smith of Elberton, GA; two very special "sons and daughters", Ken and Lisa Stoudenmire of Gainesville, GA and Byron and Jolene Fleeman of Union Point, GA; most of all,
his six prides and joys, his grandchildren, Chance, Reid and Noah Coley, James and Alex Stoudenmire and Hayden Fleeman. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Burt's United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:00 AM until service time.
