Bogart, GA - Richard A. Slaney, 59, passed away February 6, 2011.
A native of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Arthur and Hazel Slaney. Mr. Slaney retired in 1990 as a Master Chief Petty Officer from the United States Navy where he actively served his country for 22 years. Since 1985, he was a Logistics Management Instructor at the Athens Navy Supply Corps School, and most recently in Newport, Rhode Island. Mr. Slaney was a past Post Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2872 in Athens, Georgia, a member of the Military Order of the Cootie, and AMVETS. He was also a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.
Loved ones include his wife Cathy Slaney, sons Gregory (Bonnie), Adam (Anna), and Matthew Slaney; brother, Wayne Nickerson, sister Diane DiFronzo, and brother Bernard Slaney; grandsons Brenden and Chase Slaney, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Slaney was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Perry. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, WEST with Rev. Charles Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of VFW Post 2872.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
