Richard Dent Shouse

Richard Dent Shouse, of Athens, GA, passed away on June 18, 2024. The son of the late Newton Combs Shouse Jr. and Hattie Moore Shouse; Richard moved to Athens 50 years ago from his place of birth in Louisville, KY. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a devout follower of his faith. Richard spent 35 years working on the railroad, a decade as the “Kroger Man,” and was happily married to Sharon, his sweetheart of 53 years. Spending time at the beach, watching UK or UGA sports, and visiting friends at Chick-fil-A were some of his favorite pastimes, though being a father and “Poppy” to his six grandchildren was his life’s greatest joy. Richard was preceded in death by both his parents and late wife, Sharon Zehnder Shouse. He is survived by his son, Richard Michael Shouse, daughter, Amy Shouse Russell (Ben), and son, Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Martin Shouse, U.S. Army (Katherine). A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11AM. The family will receive friends immediately following the Mass in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Seneca Choices for Life of Columbus, GA at www.senecacfl.life or Veterans of Foreign Wars at vfw.org.
