Richard "Dick" G. Neal, Jr., 69, died Friday, February 1, 2013. Born at Camp Wheeler, Bibb County, Dick was the son of the late Richard G. Neal, Sr. and Myrtice Hawthorne Neal.
Dick and his wife of 44 years, Elaine Collier Neal, lived in Reston, VA for 33 years before returning to Watkinsville in 2001. He retired from Honeywell, later Wang, as a computer software developer specializing in cryptocommunication.
He served his country in both the U.S. Navy and the U. S. Air Force.
Dick was an active member of the Masonic Lodge having membership of the Eastern Star as a Past Patron and the Blue Lodge as a Past Master in Herndon, VA. His other Masonic affliations included Commandery, Scottish Rite, Athens Shriner (32 Degree) and Order of the Amaranth in Behtlehem, GA.
Dick was a 1965 graduate of the University of Georgia and a life-long fan of Georgia Bulldog sports including football, baseball and basketball. He served as past director of the Fast Break Club for the UGA Women's Basketball team.
IIn addition to his wife, survivors include two brothers, Harold (Ruhanna) Neal of Athens and Alan (Beth) Neal of Snellville, brother-in-laws, Lewis (Sharon) Collier of Watkinsville and Richard D. Collier of Lawrenceville, four nieces, two nephews and nine great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 4, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Antioch Christian Church in Watkinsville, GA with Revs. Scott Bartholomew and Steve Watson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at Lord & Stephens West Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital, 950 W. Faris Rd, Greenville, SC 29605, or to the charity of one's choice.
